SEX AND HEART ILLNESS: SEX DRIVE

Bear in mind that heart patients and their spouses are not exempt from any of the struggles that affect the sex lives of every other couple. One of these struggles has to do with sex drive; it is a rare couple that is composed of two individuals who have identical sex drives. Differences in levels of sexual energy and interest are normal in marriage. These differences can become heightened during stressful times in a marriage; one member may turn more urgently to sex for soothing of jangled nerves while the other partner is shutting down sexual feelings in response to the effects of stress.
How a couple resolves differences in sex drive has far-reaching effects on the overall quality of the marriage. I have worked with many couples whose marriages have been ruined by their, failure to solve this part of the marital puzzle. The person with more sex drive feels controlled by the other's apparent holding back of sexual openness. The person with less sex drive feels coerced and often manipulated by underlying sexual motives on the part of the constantly pursuing partner. The high-drive partner may feel that the other person is less attracted to him or her, and less in love. The low-drive partner may feel valued by the mate only for what he or she can give sexually.
